Read errors while dumping DVD
- Quote
Postby Scirvir »
Hi everyone,
Hope someone can help. I'm trying to dump a DVD game but i'm getting bad reads that crash the dumper software. I started with DIC which errored out and exited so switched to Alcohol. Including the optional Data Position Measurement setting, it seemed to read past the blocks that were giving read errors before but after 12+ hours (only 5 minutes of which were spent actuall dumping) the computer BSOD'd. Any other thing that i could try to dump this disc? Also tried Daemon tools and no dice (just to see if it'd work, i know that software isn't allowed on this archive).
I'm quite fond of archiving this release (Race Driver: GRID, 1.0, published by Codemasters, sold by FX Interactive) because it's the only release with no DRM at all; it doesn't even ask for a key. I've installed the game to the same system and played no problem, and i've used this same drive before to dump other discs with the same tools.
Here's the log DIC gave me

Considering the time it takes (12 hours!?) it sounds like your optical drive is broken. Or the disc has deteriorated so much that it's unreadable.
Try a different PC/optical drive?

Yeah, i already decided on getting another copy of the game and another drive. It's just the game installing fine which left me completely perplexed.

Does the game install fine using the same drive that fails with A120 and DIC?

Yes. I've reinstalled it three times now and played it for a few hours.

Well, try to manually copy all the files from the DVD to a temp folder, see if you get any reading errors.
Also what does A120% say?

Yeah, so the disc is damaged then, that's why both apps stalls out. And your game most likely has not read the damaged file yet which is why the game works for you atm.
Or the file is not a critical game file but something else, but I don't know since you didn't say which file it was.
Take a look at the disc and see if you can see any damage on either side. Could be a deep scratch on the data side, or the disc could have started to rot or layers separate which can cause the issues.

Was hoping that the installer would have errored out during file decompression if it was actually damaged but guess not :/

The surface itself is spotless but there's a circle right in the middle of it. It's flush with the rest of the surface (can't feel any bumps when gently passing my nails over it) so didnt think much of it . Is it possible that someone damaged it while trying to make it "look fine"?

Well, I don't know which file is damaged so I can't tell if it's part of the installer or not. But the fact that you can't copy all the data from the disc indicates it's damaged, either by rot or physical.
And I also can't tell what the damage can be without a picture of the affected area.

After finding another dvd drive i forgot i had around the house and setting it up, the dumper crashes at the same block it did with the first drive, so i'm calling this one a dud. I'll look for another one and hopefully I'lll have something to supply to the archive.
Here's a pic of the disc. Apologies for quality, my phone ain't very good.
Thanks for your time and your help mrpijey

Wow, never seen a disc like that, looks like a deliberate mastering "error", probably to prevent copying. So that disc won't be readable in any drive unless you can specify options to the software to deal with deliberate mastering errors like this... Hmm. I'll ask around and see if anyone else encountered issues like this.
Edit: What region is this title?
I found some information, it's a kind of copy protection.
Redump has a wiki section about this, look at the bottom for DVD dumping
http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title= ... ping_Guide
I can't test any of it since I don't have any games with this kind of protection. Redump has dumped other regions of this game successfully tho.
Do you have a scanner to scan the surfaces of this disc? Can you get the codes off the ring ? should be an IFPI code as well as other text.

Wow, thank you so much for the lead! I'll follow that guide as soon as i get access to redump's forum.
Here's a pic of the back of the disc. Region is ES.
Tried to upload the front too but the image uploader gives me "Error: file empty". Only has a legal disclaimer followed by "M-10157-2012 ES. v.1.00 P - DVD".
Edit:
changed the front scan to jpg and it uploaded this time.
